About

The U87 was Neumann's solid-state answer to its own U67 tube microphone, swapping the valve circuit for a FET and transformer design while keeping the same dual-diaphragm K67-style capsule. Tubes sound great, but they age, they're microphonic (they pick up vibration as noise), and they need warm-up time and careful handling. A transistor circuit gave Neumann a mic that was more stable, needed far less maintenance, and, crucially for a studio, sounded closer to identical from one unit to the next.


That consistency mattered more than it might sound like it should. As albums took longer to make and engineers began comping a lead vocal from many takes across many sessions, a mic that didn't drift in tone or level from day to day became genuinely valuable, not just convenient.


Inside, the capsule (called the K87) uses two thin diaphragms mounted on either side of a solid backplate, 34mm across. By electrically connecting or isolating the two diaphragms in different ways, the mic reshapes its own pickup pattern on the fly, which is how it gets three switchable patterns (cardioid, omni, figure-8) out of a single capsule rather than needing separate hardware for each. A low-cut filter and a pad made it flexible enough to become the default choice on vocal booths and voiceover sessions worldwide, equally happy on a whispered vocal or a loud brass section.


Neumann quietly revised the circuit many times over its production run without changing the sound, and in 1986 replaced it with the U87A(i), which added a DC-DC converter that improved sensitivity and self-noise. That revised design carries through, largely unchanged in character, to today's U87 Ai. The vintage U87's presence peak sits slightly lower too, around 8 kHz, giving it a touch less top-end bite than the current model. Original 1960s and 70s U87s are now sought after on the vintage market, mainly for their history and build rather than any dramatic sonic gap from the current model.


Notable for: The blueprint for the modern side-address studio vocal mic. Almost every large-diaphragm condenser marketed as a "vocal mic" since the 1970s is answering the U87 in some way.


Applications

Examples: Lead and backing vocals, voiceover and narration, acoustic guitar, piano (often as a stereo pair), drum overheads, and as a spot mic on brass, strings, and woodwinds in classical or orchestral sessions.


Vocals are where the U87 built its reputation, and it's still where most people reach for it first. In cardioid mode, close in, you get the classic present vocal sound with a touch of proximity effect (the bass boost that happens the closer a directional mic gets to the source), which is why it flatters most voices without much EQ help. It's forgiving of small movements too, so a singer leaning into a phrase or shifting weight mid-take doesn't throw the tone off the way a more narrowly-focused mic might.


On pop vocals specifically, the vintage U87 takes a smoother, slightly warmer route to the same job the Ai does. With its presence peak sitting lower, around 8 kHz, it adds clarity and detail without quite the same airy brightness up top, closer to a rounded, creamy top end than the Ai's more forward sizzle. Plenty of engineers prefer it for exactly that reason on pop and R&B vocals where a little less edge is welcome.


Voiceover and narration lean on the same strengths, plus a bit of history: the U87 was designed with one eye on broadcast use, and some original units even included a low-pass filter tuned specifically to avoid interfering with the 19kHz pilot tone used in FM radio transmission. That broadcast pedigree is part of why it still turns up constantly in voiceover booths, dubbing suites, and podcast studios today, anywhere a clean, intelligible spoken voice matters more than character.


On acoustic instruments, the U87 earns its keep through sheer flexibility rather than any one specialist trick. Acoustic guitar and piano both respond well with close-mic matched stereo pair of U87s. The omni patter will capture more of the room sound; cardioid pattern, by contrast, tightens the focus for a drier, more upfront sound when the room isn't part of the plan.


Further out, it's a mainstay on drum overheads, where its extended top end and even off-axis response help cymbals sit naturally with less harshness, and a long-standing spot mic choice for brass, strings, and woodwinds in classical and orchestral sessions, where its low self-noise and wide dynamic range matter as much as its tone. The figure-8 pattern gets less daily use but earns its place for mid-side stereo recording or for capturing two performers facing each other, like a vocal duet or an interview, on a single mic.
