About

The U87 Ai is the direct descendant of the original U87, using a dual-diaphragm capsule and the same FET/transformer topology, but with a DC-DC converter* that raises the capsule's polarisation voltage. The result is a real gain in sensitivity and signal-to-noise ratio over the vintage version, plus a presence lift repositioned slightly higher than the vintage model's, around 10 kHz rather than 8 kHz, with a couple of extra dB of lift, which is the technical basis for its reputation as the slightly brighter-sounding of the two.


There's genuine disagreement among technical sources over whether the Ai kept the original K87 capsule or reverted to the K67 (the capsule used in the earlier U67). Neumann's own consumer materials tend to describe it as the same capsule design; more detailed teardowns suggest the electronics changed but the capsule itself reverted to the K67, which is acoustically near-identical to the K87 anyway. Either way, the sound didn't shift in any way engineers found controversial, which tells you the capsule was never really where the character came from.


What makes the U87 Ai the default studio vocal mic, more than any single spec, is how little it asks of the engineer. Its frequency response is close to flat, with a gentle presence lift that flatters most voices without colouring them, so it rarely fights the EQ decisions you want to make later. Three polar patterns, a low-cut filter, and a pad give it the same all-purpose flexibility as the original, but with more headroom and less hiss underneath. It was inducted into the TECnology Hall of Fame in 2006, and Neumann still describes it, without much argument from anyone, as the most widely used studio microphone in the world.


Notable for: Neumann's own description calls it the world's most widely used studio microphone. In continuous production for close to 40 years under the Ai name, and over 50 counting the original U87.


Applications

Examples: Lead and backing vocals, voiceover, dubbing, and audiobook narration, acoustic guitar, piano, drum overheads, and close-miking guitar and bass cabinets.


Vocals are still where the Ai is reached for first. In cardioid mode, close in, you get the classic present vocal sound with a touch of proximity effect (the bass boost that happens the closer a directional mic gets to the source), which is why it flatters most voices without much EQ help. It's forgiving of small movements too, so a singer leaning into a phrase or shifting weight mid-take doesn't throw the tone off the way a more narrowly-focused mic might.


On pop vocals specifically, the Ai's presence lift is doing a lot of the work. That gentle boost centred around 10 kHz sits right in the range that reads as "air" and brightness on a lead vocal, giving pop, R&B, and top-line vocals a clear, forward quality without needing much high-shelf EQ to get there. It's part of why the Ai, more than the vintage model, tends to be the one reached for on modern pop sessions where a bright, present vocal is the goal rather than something to tame afterward.


Voiceover, dubbing, and audiobook narration lean on the same strengths: a clean, forward midrange that keeps spoken word intelligible without exaggerating sibilance, plus the low self-noise to sit well on a quiet, close-mic'd voice. It's a standard choice in dubbing suites and podcast studios for exactly that reason.


On acoustic instruments, the Ai earns its keep through flexibility rather than any one specialist trick. Acoustic guitar and piano both respond well to a close-mic'd matched stereo pair of Ais. The omni pattern will capture more of the room sound; the cardioid pattern, by contrast, tightens the focus for a drier, more upfront sound when the room isn't part of the plan.


Further out, it's a mainstay on drum overheads, where its extended top end and even off-axis response help cymbals sit naturally with less harshness, and a common close mic on guitar and bass cabinets, where its solid low end and detailed midrange hold up well against loud sources. The figure-8 pattern gets less daily use but earns its place for mid-side stereo recording or for capturing two performers facing each other, like a vocal duet or an interview, on a single mic.



* Glossary - In plain terms: 

  • a DC-DC converter is a small internal circuit that boosts the voltage feeding the capsule, giving it more headroom to work with. That extra voltage is what raises sensitivity (how strong a signal the mic puts out) and improves signal-to-noise ratio (how much clean signal you get relative to hiss). It also slightly shifts where the mic's natural high-frequency boost sits, which is why the Ai reads as a touch brighter on top than the vintage model.
